Role Title: Communications Officer
Organisation: Social Justice works within the Irish Jesuit Province - Irish Jesuit Missions (IJM) and Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice (JCFJ)
Location: 20 Upper Gardiner St, Dublin, Ireland (with international travel)
Start Date: June 2017
Duration: 2 year fixed contract
Type of employment: 3- 4 Days per week
Salary: Depending on experience
Reporting to: Director of Irish Jesuit Missions/Social Justice Delegate

BACKGROUND

This position will play an integral role in assisting the communication operations and strategy in the development of the social justice works within the Irish Jesuit Province which include the Irish Jesuit Missions and the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice.

Irish Jesuit Missions:
The Irish Jesuit Missions (IJM) is a registered charity and the international outreach of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus. The IJM supports Jesuit works in East Africa, Southern Africa, West Africa, Middle East, Cambodia and China. Partners include Jesuit works and Jesuit run development projects within Jesuit Provinces and partner organisations such as Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS). This position will play an integral role in the development of the organisation, supporting the 2017-2020 Strategic Plan in meeting its overall mission and goals. Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice (JCFJ) – Promoting social justice through analysis, education and advocacy
The Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice aims to promote the development of a society that is characterised by social justice, economic fairness and environmental sustainability. Through social analysis theological reflection the Centre seeks to increase awareness and understanding of social issues and advocates for reform of public policies. The issues with which the Centre is concerned include prison policy; housing and homelessness; environmental issues; the contribution of Christian ethics to economics and politics. (www.jcfj.ie)

KEY OBJECTIVES
• From a communications and marketing perspective, to maximise the current outputs (awareness raising, analysis, advocacy and fundraising) from the two social justice offices.
• To increase awareness of the social justice works within the Irish Jesuit Province
• To increase awareness of the social justice issues affecting people living in Ireland and overseas which are part of the programme work with which each social justice work is involved
• To increase funds for overseas development projects partnered within the Irish Jesuit Missions

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy Development & Delivery
• Key to the role is to support, complement and add value to the current communications and marketing activities in order to maximise the current outputs from the justice works
• In collaboration with relevant persons improve, develop and deliver the Communications and Marketing Strategy including leading on the digital marketing strategy with clearly identifiable indicators of success which can be measured on a quarterly basis
• In collaboration with relevant persons develop a communications and marketing strategy for the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice
• Liaise with overseas partners of the IJM and develop communications content that accurately reflect the contribution of the IJM to their work, and promote through various communications channels with the aim of increasing awareness and fundraising opportunities
• Support and improve all communications materials including online presence, newsletters, annual reports, strategic plans and any other publications of the social justice works to inform a better strategic approach to communications
• Ensure the smooth integration of all (online & offline) communications functions and develop tools, systems and procedures to monitor activity, effectiveness and progress
• Establish what style of digital and traditional communications and marketing is most effective in terms of fundraising and awareness raising through the piloting of campaigns on different issues through various channels, messages, campaigns and target audiences
• Support the management of communications and marketing activities effectively including the use of the Salesforce Contacts Relationship Management (CRM) system
• Identify and execute new potential marketing and communication opportunities which would improve our ability to generate net income efficiently
• Work closely with the social justice works teams to share information about events, campaigns, specific projects, programme portfolio, and programme impact for digital media, publications and other communications

Media Relations:
• Develop and implement a media strategy to highlight the work of the social justice works
• Prepare press releases in consultation with the Director and relevant persons
• Monitor and track all media coverage
• Continue to build the social media presence, as well as support the design and production of traditional publications (newsletters, bulletins, reports) and videos

Advocacy:
• Support, complement and add value to the current advocacy work
• Ensure all communications educate and raise awareness among the public and policy makers in line with the IJM and JCFJ ethos and values
• Build relationships with key groups that support the social justice works in the Irish Jesuit Province and our communications and advocacy objectives, to share learning
• Monitor developments affecting social justice issues addressed within IJM and JCFJ through regular staff meetings to ensure communications are up-to-date and relevant
• Raise the profile of the social works within the Irish Jesuit Province by developing and implementing an approach in line with the Communications and Marketing Strategy
• Collaborate with the Communications Office of the Province, the Education Office and the Jesuit secondary schools in Ireland to promote the social justice works

Other
• Organise and deliver events to increase fundraising opportunities
• Ensure that all communications, marketing and fundraising activity is carried out in line with best practice, sector guidelines and relevant legislation
• Ensure the social justice works in the Irish Jesuit Province have access to an up-to-date resource library
• Represent the social justice works at relevant meetings, workshops, seminars and events
• Maintain close harmonious working relationships with colleagues in partner organisations and within the Irish Jesuit Province
• Any other duties assigned to you by the Director

Experience
• Proven excellent communication skills, including copy-writing E
• Experience of working in social justice E
• Experience working in cross cultural environments with people at all levels of society E

Qualifications
• Degree or qualification in Communications, Journalism or Marketing related subject E

Knowledge/Skills
• Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a similar role E
• Minimum 2 years’ experience of internet marketing, with proven track record of delivering on KPIs/targets E
• Ability to write, edit and research clear and concise articles and publications to deadlines E
• Demonstrable understanding of issues related to social justice and international development E
• Experience using Adobe In Design or other desktop publishing software D
• Knowledge of key international development issues in Africa/Asia/Middle East D
• Experience CRM software D
• Experience in graphics creation, video shooting and editing and photography E
